EOQ Recipients January-March 2021

The Department of Human Resources would like to congratulate Christine Schene and Sherrell McNamara on receiving this honor.

Christine Schene, Business Services Specialist of the Enrollment Management Department, has been selected as the Nonexempt Employee of the Quarter for January-March of 2021. Christine began her career at UMBC in 2013 as an Executive Administrative Assistant in the Office of Admissions and Orientation.  She transferred to her current position in 2018.

Christine was nominated by Yvette Mozie-Ross, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and Planning. In describing her work ethic and contributions to the University, Yvette says, “Chris has consistently brought a high level of organization and efficiency to her work.  Whether serving providing administrative support (as Executive Administrative Assistant) for two busy administrators or supporting personnel and payroll processing (as Business Services Specialist) for almost 75 full-time and over 100 seasonal contingent employees, Chris develops systems that ensure she can be as efficient and responsive as possible.  Chris has earned a reputation across EM and UMBC (particularly among other Administrative Assistant groups) as a very knowledgeable and highly competent go-to person on all matters personnel and payroll. In fact, each month she leads the EM Administrative Assistants Workgroup Meetings to facilitate the sharing of best practices amongst the work group as well as to identify opportunities for training and development for group members.”

Christine’s nomination was also enthusiastically supported by the various areas under the Division of Enrollment Management.

Dr. Ken Baron, Assistant Vice Provost for Academic and Pre-professional Advising states, “Chris’s “hands-on” approach to managing an incredibly complex payroll of 100 plus orientation advisors is worthy of the highest praise. During regular summers and winters, this work requires meticulous record-keeping, follow-through, and an encyclopedic knowledge of all hiring and payroll protocols.  Since the orientation program recruits advisors from across the campus, including faculty, staff, graduate students, and those with various other University affiliations, Chris must carefully evaluate every advisor and provide the correct kind of contract to secure their eligibility and format for payment. To make things even more challenging, as a result of COVID-19, we transitioned our orientation program to an online virtual model this past summer.  Chris rose to the occasion and ensured things ran as smoothly as ever – consulting with all stakeholders and spearheading the use of available and newly created reports to drive efficiencies and maintain quality control.   We are indebted to Chris for her outstanding efforts to support Orientation advising.”

Jane Hickey, former Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships adds, “Christine Schene is an outstanding colleague.  Her expert knowledge of payroll, human resources and budget coupled with her willingness to help any of us in Enrollment Management when we call on her make Chris a key person in keeping Enrollment Management moving forward efficiently and in compliance with all university policies.  I cannot express how much I have valued her support.”

Dale Bittinger, Assistant Vice Provost for UG Admissions, Orientation and School Partnerships states, “the personal interaction that Chris has with new employees serves as an example of how we serve students, families, and colleagues.  From the beginning, she helps set the tone for what it means to work in Enrollment Management.” Pam Hawley, University Registrar states, “Chris is an extremely collaborative, resourceful and responsive go-to when we need tips and guidance on HR practices and budget management tools.  Her expertise and attention to detail keep all of us in EM on point.”

Christine was presented her award during a virtual staff meeting and was surprised and proud to learn she was selected as Employee of the Quarter.

Sherrell McNamara , HRIS Manager of the Human Resources Department, has been selected as the Exempt Employee of the Quarter for January-March of 2021. Sherell began her career with UMBC in July 1994 as an Administrator in the Department of Human Resources.  She was promoted to her current position in 2005.

Sherrell was nominated by Shelly Johnson, Accounting Associate of the Shriver Center. In describing her work ethic and dedication to the department, Shelly says, “Since the beginning of remote hiring, Sherrell has stood out to me as someone I could go to for direction.  She was always available to answer questions but to also include links to resources on the website for additional support.  During the closing of FY20 the payroll calculations with non-leap year vs leap year, it was confusing but Sherrell never lost her patience with me and really took the time to KINDLY explain where I made my mistakes. She understood during our remote onboarding process that we (payroll preparers) were learning a process put in place quickly and reassured me that making mistakes were inevitable.  Emotionally, Sherrell is a very supportive person and always a positive influence during these difficult times.”

“For having to transition so quickly to remote work, Sherrell has shown leadership in educating us with great communication -whether it’s in the published memos or the day to day email conversations.  I feel confident that anything new that comes along, she will let us know timely and with a compassion that we are human and will make mistakes as we adjust to the extended remote working.”

Sherrell was presented her award during a virtual staff meeting and was surprised and proud to learn she was selected as the Exempt Employee of the Quarter.

Recipients receive $500, a special parking space, one day of administrative leave, a certificate, his/her name on the Employee of the Quarter plaque and an invitation to the annual Service Award Ceremony.
