YMCA is a trusted program that has provided educational and developmental support to children and families for over 160 years. The Y at UMBC was established over a decade ago and has a newly renovated facility located in the heart of UMBC’s thriving campus. Convenient for faculty, staff, and students, while providing high-quality early learning for your precious little one.

 

The Y at UMBC preschool program combines a safe and happy educational environment with a curriculum designed to stimulate intellectual, emotional, and physical growth.  The Y at UMBC accommodates students 2 to 5 years of age.  The standard application fee will be waived for UMBC faculty, staff, and students.

Tuition Remission

  • Tuition Remission – available to employees and their spouse/dependent child(ren); review applicable policies, eligibility criteria, deadline dates and forms requirements for UMBC and other USM institutions.
  • Tuition Reimbursement – allows employees to take courses at non-USM institutions when discipline is not available within the USM. Courses must be job-related in order for reimbursement to be approved.
  • UMBC Training Center – may offer tuition discounts for various training and certifications.

Other Employee/Family Personal Services

UMBC Employee Assistance Program via ComPsych: counselors are trained, licensed professionals who can advise Regular and Contingent II employees and their household members on a wide range of problems – emotional illness, work life issues, relationship or family difficulties, alcohol or other drug abuse, legal or financial difficulties, and other major life or health changes.

UMBC Cares Faculty and Staff Emergency Fund was established to assist eligible employees experiencing an emergency financial need.

211 Maryland offers guidance and support to help adults, teens, families, seniors, veterans, caregivers, clergy and professions find the services they needs such as:

  • Basic Needs:  Utility assistance, food, housing and shelter, transportation and employment
  • Health Care:  Health and dental clinics, drug and alcohol programs and mental health
  • Family Resources:  Childcare, parenting programs, eldercare and literacy, and more

Lifeline is a federal program that helps limited income consumers pay for their telephone and internet services by providing a monthly discount. The cost of the program is shared by all telephone customers. In Maryland the program is called Tel-Life.  Visit the website to review program eligibility and services.

UMBC offers employees a variety of leave benefits designed to accommodate personal and professional needs.  Availability of benefits are based upon eligibility and category of employment.

Paid Leave:  Leave benefits available dependent upon category of employment.

Family and Medical Leave Act:  The FMLA allows employees up to 12 weeks of paid or unpaid leave for qualifying medical event wherein the University will continue to pay its portion of health benefits.  There are various options available to ensure protection of an employee’s job and benefits with the onset of a serious medical condition experienced by the employee or immediate family member.

Holidays: 15 paid holidays (16 in election year).  Must be employed on calendar date of occurrence in order to receive credit for holiday when it is observed by the University.

Jury Duty:  Regular employees are excused from work when called upon to serve and receive usual compensation without charge to accrued leave, provided appropriate documentation is supplied to verify jury service.

Military Leave: 15 days of administrative leave for anyone enlisted in the armed forces or organized militia for observance of annual training exercises or military call up.

Employee/Labor Relations

Maintaining positive employer-employee relationships which promote satisfactory productivity, morale, and motivation is critical. Employee Relations staff members assist with the prevention and resolution of problems which arise out of or impact work situations. Learn more here.

USM Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Occasionally, individuals may experience personal problems that may become overwhelming.   This could include family, financial, childcare/eldercare issues, etc.  The Employee Assistance Program is available as a confidential  resource to assist with managing personal issues. There are two types of referrals: self referral (strictly confidential with no notice to  employer); or supervisory referral (when personal issues have affected employee work performance).  Visit the EAP webpage for more information.

Center for Mediation & Conflict Resolution

Members of the campus community may contact Human Relations Manager for assistance in the management and or resolution of interpersonal and group conflict. This may include complaint investigation, mediation, facilitation, and other dispute resolution strategies. Learn more here.

Financial Hardship Resources

Everyone has financial questions. The UMBC Cares Faculty and Staff Emergency Fund was established to assist eligible employees experiencing an emergency financial need.

Resources, information, speakers and subject matter experts from on and off-campus present workshops and seminars to provide information on various topics such as:  health, exercise, nutrition, stress management, financial planning, time management, safety, healthy relationships, ergonomics and a host of other topics that assist employees with balancing personal and professional goals.

Safe Zone Training:  interactive workshops designed to help you explore issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

Kognito (kognito.com/maryland) provides a suite of online training programs for faculty, staff and students to practice having difficult conversations.  The “at-risk” program is an online game-based simulation with virtual students. Faculty and staff sharpen their skills in recognizing signs of psychological distress, addressing ways to approach students, and discovering ways to support and refer students to mental health services on campus.

Post Retirement Benefits

  • Golden ID Program – The Golden ID Program permits eligible Maryland residents to enroll in up to three UMBC undergraduate courses per semester at little cost.  If you qualify, you may enroll as a degree-seeking or a non-degree-seeking student. To qualify for Golden ID, you must meet the following requirements:
    • 60 years of age or older
    • Retired
    • Your chief income is derived from retirement benefits
    • You are not employed full time
  • Emeritus Status is awarded to faculty and nonexempt and exempt staff based upon meritorious service to UMBC.  Employees awarded emeritus are allowed continued access to UMBC facilities, IT services and free admission to campus events.
  • Continued IT Access- Aside from Emeritus, retirees may be allowed continued access to IT services related to post-retirement research, alumni services and campus organizations.  Visit the Department of Information Technology for more information.
