MedImpact updates

Last fall, the State of Maryland’s Employee Benefits Division (EBD) announced that CVS Caremark would be replaced by a new pharmacy benefits manager, MedImpact, effective January 1, 2025. New cards and information were sent to enrollees in December.

Please note: the State’s medical and prescription plans are separate. The State’s medical plan vendors are Carefirst BCBS, United Healthcare, and Kaiser. Only the State’s prescription plan changed from CVS Caremark to MedImpact, effective January 1, 2025.

The Human Resources & Strategic Talent Management (HRSTM) team has received inquiries from employees regarding the transition to the new pharmacy vendor. We are sharing information and working closely with the University System of Maryland (USM) regarding any available updates.

The following highlights were shared by the State Employee Benefits Division:

  • Employees and their dependents who were enrolled in prescription coverage with CVS Caremark were automatically enrolled with MedImpact as of January 1, 2025.
  • All drugs can be filled for three months (90 days) until March 31, 2025.
  • If a change may be necessary, the member will receive a letter from MedImpact at their home address.
  • The letter will provide instructions for the member to speak with their physician to determine if an alternative is available, or have the physician submit a prior authorization for coverage as of April 1, 2025.
  • All available refills from CVS Caremark mail order were automatically transferred to MedImpact’s direct mail order program, Birdi.
