Contingent I Renewals

Renewal of Contingent I Agreement

Individuals working in the If & When Needed (working less than 20 hours per week) status category may have their agreements renewed on an ongoing basis.  There is no limit to the number of times the agreement can be renewed.

Individuals working in a Temporary (20 or more hours per week) status category may have their agreements renewed one time (usually six months).  Individuals may work for a total of a one year period in the Temporary status category.

Emergency Extension: If an individual in the Temporary (20 or more hours per week) status has completed one year of work and is still needed to continue in the position, you may request an emergency extension. Please contact the Payroll unit to discuss the situation. Emergency extensions are granted in increments of three months.

Submission of Paperwork for Approval

  1. Submit the Contingent I Contract; and
  2. Change PAR
Note: A resume or application is not needed for renewals.

Background Checks: All new hires including Contingent I positions require successful completion of a criminal background check  prior to hiring/contract approval. If the individual being renewed has not completed a background check previously, a check will need to be conducted.  Please include the contact information for the candidate on the Contingent I contract.

Note: If the position will be directly working with minors (under the age of 18, not including UMBC Students), a fingerprint check will be required. The authorized person in the hiring department will verify that the fingerprint check was successfully completed and sign the Contingent I contract.  Any questions regarding fingerprint checks should be directed to hrbackground@umbc.edu. The candidate does NOT need to do both a fingerprint check and commercial check.

A commercial background check through our vendor is required for all other positions not working directly with minors.   HR Payroll will send the background check authorization form to the candidate via email (sent from National Background Investigations).  The candidate will complete the form and provide authorization.  It is important that the candidate respond as soon as possible to avoid delays.  HR Payroll will verify that the results of the background are successfully completed.

Human Resources will review the contract.  If a background check is needed, one will be conducted.   Once approved, the contact person listed on the form will be notified that the form is ready for pick up.

Note:  Please make sure that the title and status of your position number matches the title and status on the Contingent I form prior to submitting the paperwork to Payroll.  Your paperwork will not be able to be processed if the information does not match.
