Retirement Plan Selection for New Hires

  • New Hires should view the Retirement Plan Selection page for steps to submit initial selection.
  • New Hires are required by law to submit retirement selections prior to their first day of employment.  New hires should review the information in the above link prior to submitting their new hire paperwork.
  • Delayed retirement selection may delay the receipt of a new employee’s first paycheck.

Overview

All Regular non-exempt employees (other than law enforcement officers) are required to join the Maryland State Retirement Teachers/Employees Pension System (MSRPS) immediately upon employment.  Regular law enforcement officers are required to join the Law Enforcement Officers Pension System (LEOPS).  Regular Exempt staff and faculty may elect to join either MSRPS or the Optional Retirement Program; retirement election is permanent and irrevocable.  Please see the following memo regarding recent (7/1/2017) law changes with respect to retirement election.  Contingent employees are not eligible to join a retirement program, other than Supplemental Retirement.  Review the Pension Plan/Optional Retirement Program Comparison Chart for a general overview of plan differences.
